What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is the process of using a specialised machine to remove unwanted hair using a concentrated beam of light to target the hair follicles and destroy them whilst leaving the surrounding skin unharmed. For those wanting precise, quick, and pain-free hair removal, laser hair removal is a popular option for removing hair safely and effectively.

How does laser hair removal work?

Unlike other hair removal methods, laser hair removal targets the hair follicles. The laser’s light is absorbed by the hair’s pigment (melanin), which is then converted to heat, destroying the follicle. As a result, the damage done to the follicle helps to minimise and delay future hair growth.

What laser is used?

Here at KL Cosmetics, we use the top-of-the-range Diolaze, which is one of the most advanced machines in laser hair removal technology. Offering fast, safe, and virtually pain-free treatments, the Diolaze is very effective for those seeking long-lasting hair reduction for their unwanted body hair.

Does the laser hurt?

Hair removal with the Diolaze is relatively pain-free. Due to the laser’s powerful cooling system, the laser targets the hair at the root level, leaving the surrounding skin’s surface unharmed. It is very rare to experience any discomfort during your laser hair removal treatment, and our certified specialists will ensure your comfort is the top priority at all times.

How much does a laser hair removal appointment cost?

The cost of laser hair removal treatments will depend on the clinic and the laser they use. At KL Cosmetics, prices range from £45 for small facial area laser hair removal, to £170 for larger body areas such as the chest. Packages can be purchased for multi-area treatments.

How effective are laser hair removal treatments?

How effective your laser treatment is will depend on a few factors. Generally, the higher the contrast between the targeted hair and the skin, the more effective the treatment, meaning lighter skin tones tend to see more effective results than darker skin tones.

Since the laser targets the melanin in the hair follicle, the darker the pigment of the hair, the more melanin is present for the laser to target. Because of this, dark and coarse hair will see the most results from laser treatment, with more potential for permanent hair reduction.

Due to the destruction of the hair follicles, laser hair removal can help the reduction of ingrown hairs, resulting in smoother and less irritated skin. Unlike shaving and plucking unwanted hair, laser hair removal works to make the hair thinner and straighter, resulting in less chance of hair becoming ingrown.

With each session, you’ll notice a significant reduction in the hair growth of the treated area, with most patients achieving up to 90% hair reduction after completing their full treatment plan.

How long does laser hair removal last?

How long the results of your treatment last after your course can vary. Some patients will find their hair doesn’t grow back for years, others may find it is a few months.

When your hair regrows after treatments, it is likely to be less noticeable than it was before your laser hair removal. Some may find that another course of treatments in the future to maintain minimal hair growth.

How many sessions of hair removal do I need?

6-8 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart are often needed to get full results from your laser hair removal. Being regular with your appointments will help to ensure every hair is targeted as laser hair removal targets the hair at the growth stage, and different patches of hair will be at different growth stages due to shaving and other hair removal routines.

Some find that their hair is much finer and less noticeable after their first initial treatment, however, we recommend continuing with the full course to achieve optimal results.

How long does a laser treatment session last?

How long a session lasts will depend on the size of the area being treated. Sessions at KL usually take 10-30 minutes, with larger areas like the chest, legs, and back taking up to 30 minutes, and smaller areas such as the face taking only 10-15.

Areas that can be treated

Thanks to Diolaze’s gentle laser, many areas of the body can be treated.

If you’re considering laser hair removal, the areas we can treat are:

The face: Including the upper lip, chin, between the brows, earlobes, sideburns, cheeks, and neck.

Hands, feet, arms, and legs: Including toes, knuckles, arms, underarms and legs.

Front and back: Including the chest, nipples, back, and bikini area.

How to prepare for your laser hair removal treatment

It is important to remember that laser hair removal is a cosmetic medical procedure and will be carried out by a trained specialist who will have the knowledge to advise you. The process of your treatment will be explained by your specialist before your treatment and will cover all stages of the process including preparation and aftercare.

Consultation

Before starting your first treatment, a consultation will be arranged to evaluate your skin type, hair colour, and any relevant medical history. Depending on these factors, a patch test may be conducted to ensure your skin responds well to the laser and give you an idea of the sensation to expect during the hair removal treatment.

Preparation

Before each session, the treatment area will need to be shaved. Some dos and don’ts to follow before your session are:

  • Don’t wax or pluck any hairs as this removes the hair follicle, which is what the laser targets during treatment.
  • Do avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks before your session.
  • Don’t apply any harsh products to your skin before your appointment as they may affect your skin’s sensitivity.

During your treatment

As mentioned, Diolaze’s cooling technology will make your treatment faster and more comfortable. During your laser hair removal, you may feel a mild sensation which some patients have said is similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin, but this is minimal and will not be painful.

What to do after your session

After your session, you may experience some redness or slight swelling which typically fades within a few hours. Over the following weeks of treatment, you’ll notice the hairs shedding, leading to smoother and more attractive skin.

Aftercare

Aftercare is very important to ensure the best results from your course of laser hair removal. It is important to look after your skin with SPF to protect the skin from the sun and to stay hydrated to keep your skin healthy and glowing. Following through with any future treatments will also ensure you get the best results from your laser hair removal, not doing so could result in your hair growth coming back quicker than if you had completed all the recommended sessions.
