Botox and dermal fillers for men

As more and more men become aware of their appearances and the availability of certain treatments and products to improve them, we are seeing a rise in the number of males who visit us, here at KL Cosmetic Clinics in Doncaster, for Botox® and dermal filler treatments. There has been a steady increase due to several factors, from guys having more confidence to undergo non-surgical treatments, the rise in cases of divorce and later-life dating, to the simple fact that nowadays, it’s more socially acceptable for a man to be interested in self-care, male grooming and to correct any imperfections which may bother him. We welcome the change and offer simple and concise advice for those men who are interested in Botox® and dermal fillers and how these treatments can help them to perhaps look more masculine and feel more confident.

If you’re completely new to treatments for men then a good place to start, is to understand the difference between Botox® (anti-wrinkle injections) and dermal fillers.

What is Botox®?

Amazingly, Botox® (Botulinum Toxin) is one of the most deadly substances known to man, if ingested. It can cause botulism, a severe life-threatening illness and was discovered after people became ill after eating sausages which had gone bad. However, and scary stuff aside, when administered via injection by a medical professional, Botox® is a valuable medication and used to treat a variety of medical conditions such as muscle spasms, hyperhidrosis (excess sweating), weak bladder function and of course, for anti-ageing purposes.

Botox® works by blocking signals from the nerve cells which cause facial muscles to create facial expressions. For muscles to contract, the facial nerves release a chemical messenger (a neurotransmitter) called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine attaches itself to the receptors of the muscle cells and causes them to shorten or contract. When we inject Botox, the toxin prevents the release of acetylcholine which stops the contraction of these muscle cells. Botox causes a reduction in muscle contraction, allowing the muscles to become less stiff , thereby relaxing them.

After you have had a Botox® treatment, the substance is naturally dispersed by the body very quicky (within a day or so), leaving only the smoothing results at the sites of the injections (meaning less dynamic lines and wrinkles). Your results can last anything from 3 to 6 months, depending on your individual response to Botox®. However, it has been found that if you have regular treatments (once or twice a year), Botox® can help to prevent further lines and wrinkles from appearing.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are highly effective non-surgical injectable treatments used for the purposes of facial rejuvenation, contouring and profile balancing. They contain hyaluronic acid (HA), a cushioning, hydrating substance, which holds up to one thousand times its own weight in water. This makes HA a ‘super’ hydrator for the skin tissues. HA dermal fillers come in various thicknesses, and can help lift, sculpt, plump and re-shape the facial contours.

Dermal fillers can enhance your natural features by restoring volume where needed, sculpting facial contours and filling in deeper lines and wrinkles, which are unaffected by Botox® injections. This can result in a more youthful and refreshed appearance but offers natural-looking results, when administered effectively by a medically-trained professional such as ours here at KL Cosmetic Clinics.

How can Botox® and dermal fillers help me?

If you are someone who is looking to improve your appearance, if you are feeling that you look tired, dehydrated, lined or even simply older than your years, or if you simply want to tweak a few lines or erase a couple of wrinkles, Botox® and dermal fillers could be the perfect option for you. However, before we undertake any facial treatment, here at KL Cosmetic Clinics, we will ask that you attend a no obligation, pre-procedure facial examination and initial consultation. This will allow us to really study your facial anatomy, advise on the best course of action and explain fully, how the treatment will take place. We will also check your medical history to ensure that any injectable treatment we advise, will be safe for you to undergo. When you are happy that Botox® or dermal fillers will be right for you, we will invite you to book your appointment for treatment.

Does Botox® or dermal fillers hurt?

Any injectable treatment offers some form of slight discomfort, as we are using needles after all. However, the needles used for Botox® are so tiny and thin, that only very mild discomfort, if any can be felt. As gentlemen have thicker skin tissues than women, we tend to find that guys really don’t feel much at all. With dermal fillers, we may use a topical anaesthetic, as these need to be injected deeper in to the dermal layers and can offer some discomfort if a numbing cream is not used. However, most dermal fillers actually contain Lidocaine, an injectable ‘block’ helping us to maintain your comfort at all times.

If you are interested in Botox® or dermal fillers to help improve your facial appearance, one of our team will be more than happy to discuss with you, your options and to book in your initial consultation. After all, if the ladies swear by these treatments to maintain a youthful and healthy look, why shouldn’t you?
