What to expect, the first time you have
Botox® treatment

Let’s face it, none of us want to look older than we are.

Ageing is, however, an inevitable part of life, but we don’t have to succumb to its effects completely; Botox® treatment can offer a significant improvement in the way we not only look, but how we feel.

At KL Cosmetic Clinics in Doncaster, we treat patients every day, who are embarking on their first Botox® procedure and regularly hear the same questions. We’ve put together a list of what to expect when having Botox® for the very first time, so you can make an informed decision on whether you think that wrinkle-relaxing treatment could be for you.

What to expect the first time you have Botox – pre treatment

During a no obligation, initial consultation, our nurses will assess your facial movement and advise you how many areas would be best suited to each patient – 1, 2 or 3 areas. They’ll also check your medical history to ensure you are safe and suitable for treatment.

Photos will be taken for our records and for comparisons, before and after your anti-wrinkle treatment.

We are able to consult and treat you on the same day, as we work alongside a fully qualified nurse prescriber who would be able to prescribe Botox® for you, providing it is safe for you to undergo and you are happy to go ahead with the treatment. Botox is a prescription medicine and should only be administered after consultation and consent, by a medic.

Treatment areas consist of the following:

  • 1 area – crow’s feet or frown lines
  • 2 areas – often forehead and frown lines
  • 3 areas – crow’s feet, frown lines and forehead

After your first Botox appointment

After your treatment, the full effects of Botox® can take between 24 hours and 2 weeks to develop. It is after the 2-week period that you can return to the clinic for a review or adjustment treatment, if your nurse feels it is needed.

A review dose is not guaranteed at this appointment; however, we will discuss your results and whether we feel it is required. It might be that you will need to get used to the results and become accustomed to how your facial muscles respond to the treatment. We always take a ‘less is more’ approach to Botox® so as to give you natural results every time. If on your next appointment you feel you need more Botox® this can be discussed.

It’s important to remember that Botox® can take effect at different stages. For example, one brow might be slightly higher than the other, initially. This will settle over the 2-week period and can be assessed in your review appointment. The trick with Botox® is not to panic and demand a top up, before the 2-week period has elapsed.
After your anti-wrinkle treatment and for a few days, your forehead can feel tight and slightly ‘pulled’. However, over time, you will get used to this feeling. It is completely normal and part of the treatment process. The level of restricted facial muscle movement will depend on the dosage given and varies from patient to patient.

The area of injection point might appear initially, to have ‘bubble wrap’ style raised marks. However, this is quite normal and will subside after around 30 to 60 minutes after your Botox® treatment.

You may feel some tenderness, bruised to move/touch sensations around the injection areas, but this will settle in around 24 to 48 hours, following your Botox® injection treatment. Cold compress and arnica tablets can help, as well as avoiding excessive amounts of alcohol and steam rooms/saunas for 24 hours after treatment.

The good news is that with Botox® there is no clinical downtime and no usual side-effects, apart from potential slight bruising and tenderness in the treatment areas. You will need to adhere to some aftercare guidelines but these are very mild and will not require a period of rest and relaxation.

Is Botox the right treatment for me?

It’s important to remember that Botox® treats facial muscles and not lax skin. If you have a significant amount of skin sagging, you will need to speak with your practitioner about alternative treatments, to combat this.

If you have facial lines at rest and have had them for many years, one treatment will not be sufficient to eliminate them. Anti-ageing treatment is a process. Regular 4-monthly Botox treatments would be needed. We would then assess the lines after 1 year and add dermal filler after this time if needed.

At KL Cosmetic Clinics, we have a wide range of treatments to help with sagging or lax skin, which can be offered in conjunction with Botox® treatments.
