The KL guide to lip filler aftercare

Injectable dermal fillers are a fantastic way to augment, re-shape and plump the lips for a youthful and healthy appearance and at KL Cosmetic Clinics in Doncaster, we treat hundreds of patients a month with this effective, non-surgical injectable treatment. However, the treatment itself is really the tip of the iceberg when it comes to obtaining optimum results. A good lip filler practitioner will always give you before and after instructions on how to look after yourself and your lips prior and following your treatment, so that you can prepare well for treatment and help to achieve symmetrical and beautiful looking lips, after leaving our clinic.

What do I do before my lip filler treatment at KL Cosmetic Clinics?

Before your lip filler treatment at KL Cosmetic Clinic, we would strongly recommend that you avoid heat such as sunbeds, hot baths, saunas and steam, for 24 to 48 hours, as heat can increase the risk of bruising after the treatment. We would also recommend to avoid blood thinning medication, such as ibuprofen. If you do need to take a pain killer, stick to paracetamol only. Drink plenty of water before your treatment, so that your skin is hydrated and the hyaluronic acid within the dermal filler can absorb the water from your skin to assist with skin hydration and we would also recommend that you eat before and not immediately after your lip filler treatment, as there is a likelihood that you may be swollen and tender for some while afterwards. If you have had any topical anaesthetic, this may take some time to wear off, so you don’t want to be injuring your lips by mistake when eating, because you cannot feel that you have bitten them!

What to expect after a lip filler treatment at KL Cosmetic Clinics

Swelling of the lips is very common after a lip filler treatment and may last up to 2 weeks, post procedure. The initial swelling however usually lasts only 2 to 4 days. Bruising is normal too and some patients bruise more easily than others. With this in mind, expect to see your optimum result after 2 weeks of the initial treatment. You may find that your lips feel lumpy or tender at the injection sites. Again, this is perfectly normal and is simply the swelling of the area/s where the cannula or needle has passed through. If there is no tenderness that accompanies the small lumps, this may be residual filler, which can be massaged out after 2 weeks of the initial treatment. In very rare cases, a ‘review’ treatment may be required after this 2 week period, where we can add more filler if needed or correct any asymmetry which may still be present.

Aftercare following a dermal filler treatment for the lips

Aftercare is fairly straightforward and in most cases, using common sense is key. We ask that you avoid makeup for 24 to 48 hours, steer clear of excessive heat, such as sunbeds, saunas and steam, as heat can cause further swelling or bruising. We also ask that you avoid exercise for 48 hours and drink plenty of water, to stay hydrated and to assist with healing. Avoiding excessive amounts of alcohol and getting a good amount of sleep will also help you to heal and feel better.

What are the risks of dermal filler injections in the lips?

As with any injectable, non-surgical treatments, there are risks involved, such as allergic reaction or a blocked artery (vascular occlusion). However, all our practitioners here at KL Cosmetic Clinics are medically-trained to resolve any issues quickly and simply. Using Hyalase to dissolve dermal filler which may have been placed in to an artery or vein, is the best way to effectively remove unwanted dermal filler and to avoid more serious consequences. Hyalase can also be used to dissolve over-filled lips or lips where the filler has migrated to other areas around the lips after years of initial treatment. Once the old filler has been dissolved effectively, we can re-treat the lips, after 2 weeks of the Hyalase treatment.

If you are considering dermal fillers to accentuate, correct or replenish your lips, it’s important to consider the before and aftercare, as well as the risks that could arise during a treatment and to choose a practitioner who is medically-qualified to administer dermal fillers. At Kl Cosmetic Clinics, our team of medical professionals hold all the necessary qualifications and have undergone intensive training in this area, to ensure that your dermal filler lip treatment goes smoothly and safely.
