We love winter for the cosy nights and fluffy blankets, but not the dry, dehydrated skin that can often accompany it! If you have dry, sensitive skin, taking preventive steps against cold weather is essential for keeping your skin healthy and comfortable. Even though the dull Winter months may be dull and drab, this doesn’t mean the same has to be said for your skin!
Winter can cause havoc on our skin, but what can we do to keep our happy, healthy skin all year round?
During the cold weather of winter, the dry air sucks the moisture away from your skin cells, resulting in a flaky skin barrier which can become inflamed and irritated if not taken care of. This can result in your skin becoming dry and taking on a red and flaky appearance, which might even be sensitive to the touch. Luckily, these skin issues are treatable and preventable, so we’ve collected our top tips to keeping your skin healthy and supple.
Creamy or oil-based cleansers are perfect for this time of year as they help keep your skin barrier nice and healthy. They remove dirt and impurities really well without over-drying. Our all-time favourite skin range, ZO Skin Health has a range of fabulous cleansers, one being the Hydrating Cleanser is amazing for this time of year.
Another great tip through, make sure you’re using warm (not hot!) water when washing your face – hot water will irritate and dry out your skin even more!
Keep an eye out for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides and glycerin – these all help lock in moisture!
Dry skin is an issue caused by a lack of moisture within the skin. As winter is the main culprit for dry skin, many people swap their usual moisturiser for a winter skincare routine to keep their skin smooth and protected against harsher weather.
As the weather gets colder, you may find yourself needing to reach for moisturisers with a little more ‘oomph’ behind them throughout the next few months! Our favourites are Growth Factor Serum and Hydrating Creme, again, all from our much loved ZO Skin Health range. These products will replenish any moisture drawn out by the colder temperatures and central heating and keep your skin healthy and hydrated!
To keep your body soft and supple look for ingredients like shea butter, squalane and hyaluronic acid – these all help provide a deep level of hydration. We absolutely love the ZO body smoothing creme!!
For optimum hydration, we love to pair our moisturisers with a hydrating serum. Serums penetrate deeper into the skin providing a concentrated dose of moisture. ZO Illuminating AOX Serum is a product we couldn’t live without throughout the dull, dismal months!
Top tip – Always make sure you apply serums before you moisturise for maximum effectiveness.
Just because there’s a lack of sun at the moment, this doesn’t mean just because it’s colder doesn’t mean the UV rays aren’t damaging. They can still penetrate through the clouds and cause skin damage so SPF is essential all year round. Heliocare 360 is our constant go-to in the clinic.
Although Winter can draw in dryness and flakiness from dead skin cells, over-exfoliation can do more harm than good. Try and limit exfoliation to once or twice a week and opt for milder acids such as lactic acid.
We love love love ZO exfoliating Polish, it’s the ultimate exfoliant.
Laser season is upon us! Although most skin treatments we offer at KL Cosmetic Clinics can be carried out safely and effectively throughout Summer, the cooler months of winter are often a perfect time to get your skin summer-ready. Treatments such as IPL Lumecca (to reduce that pesky pigmentation) and Laser Hair Removal are both treatments that can work beautifully throughout winter without the stress of booking around holidays and avoiding sun exposure. Zo Stimulator peels, IPL and Laser hair removal are our go-to winter treatments
Cold air can be tough on your lips, making them more susceptible to dryness and cracking. Keep a nourishing lip balm handy, and reapply as needed throughout the day.
Avoid licking your lips, as it can strip away natural oils, worsening dryness.
We know winter can be a little tougher on the skin, but there’s no reason you can’t have happy, healthy skin all year round with the help of our top winter skin tips!
