Are my lips going down quickly? Swelling and layering lip fillers

Lip fillersDermal fillers for the lips are extremely popular nowadays and can correct, augment, re-shape and enlarge the lips. For many of us, as we get older, our lips tend to slim down and lose their fullness, so investing in a treatment using dermal fillers can really help our confidence.

At KL Cosmetic Clinics in Doncaster, we sometimes get asked by our patients if their lips are losing volume, too quickly. There are a few reasons for this and in many cases, we advise our patients to be patient, and treat dermal fillers as a longer-term journey than some of our other injectable treatments.

Let’s explain…

Lip filler swelling

When you have a dermal filler treatment for your lips, they are going to swell up.

This is because the lips are very vascular and sensitive, so using a cannula or needle in this area, as well as filling the lips with an innate, gel-like substance is going to cause a swelling response. This is why we always advise our patients that the look they receive immediately after a lip filler treatment, is not going to be the final result and for some, it can be a little surprising how much the lips can swell and then go down.

Lip filler swelling tends to go down within 48 hours of treatment, but for some patients it can take up to 4 days. Once the  lip filler swelling has gone down, the product will settle and you’ll see your ‘final’ result within two weeks.

In some cases, patients might feel like there is very little difference, so we have to show them their before pictures, so they can see how the treatment has affected their lip volume and shape.

A natural approach to the final result

At KL Cosmetic Clinics we don’t believe that we should over fill the lips and much prefer to opt for enhancement that suits your face and its shape, than those ‘fish lips’ that you might see in the media or on TV. As we are physically filling the tissues and integrating a foreign substance under the skin, we must do this carefully and gradually, even if you are seeking a major change in your lip appearance.

We definitely in these cases, recommend building the lips over a number of appointments, not only for your comfort and to minimise the amount of swelling and bruising, but so that you can see, step-by-step after each appointment, the development of your lip size and shape. It’s easy to add, but more complicated to take away. Less is more when it comes to administering lip fillers, even if you do wish for a major augmentation of this area.

1 syringe of lip filler is 1ml, or just 1/5th of a teaspoon, which is a tiny amount. It’s best – and safest – built up over time.

Over 6-9 months we can build the initial shape, volume and aesthetic you desire; you might have two or three appointments with your KL nurse. Then, you’ll take maintenance appointments every 6-12 months depending on how your body breaks down the lip filler, to keep the look. This generally applies to any style of lip filler, from subtle tweaks and volume restoration to full-on Russian lip fillers.

Why we don’t inject lots of lip filler at once

At KL Cosmetic Clinics, we have your wellbeing and safety at the forefront of everything we do, so do expect your practitioner to advise you on the best route to take with your lip filler treatment. They may push back if you state you want it all done there and then, and this is because we have a duty of care and have a great amount of experience in offering the very best results, but done in a safe way, we have to maintain our reputation as professional, ethical and responsible practitioners, as well as delivering beautiful results.

Injecting too much dermal filler in one go can not only be sore and offer significant swelling and bruising, but the results can be questionable. The lips can become lumpy, product can ‘migrate’ into areas where you didn’t wish for the filler to be (we have all seen those trout pouts with the white line or strange looking shape above the lip line).

Let’s face it, that is NOT attractive and we simply won’t put your health or looks at risk by over-administering large amounts of filler at once.

The KL approach to lip filler…

Instead, we create a bespoke and tailored treatment plan for you lip fillers, so that in either one, two, three or even four sessions, you obtain the look that you are hoping for. We will also show you some before and after images of patients with similar facial anatomy, requirements and the results achieved.

If you are simply looking for a little more volume or if you’d like to get rid of your smoker’s lines, we can show you similar cases. If you would prefer a more dramatic effect, we can show you images of other patients who have gone through the process, step-by-step.

We will also do our best to advise you on the look that your unique face will suit. You are never going to look like another person, as you are you, an individual with your own facial contours and we encourage everyone to choose a look that will be naturally complimentary, realistic and flattering. We will also check your medical history before any treatment takes place, so we know that a treatment using dermal fillers will be safe for you to undergo.
