The lip flip – the alternative to lip fillers

A full and beautiful pout is something many of us covet. As we age, the lips can become thinner, especially the top lip. This can mean that we can start to look sad and older than our years. Dermal fillers are a fantastic treatment for adding volume to the lips, for a fuller appearance. However, in some cases, dermal fillers might not be suitable or what a patient is looking for. In these instances, the use of wrinkle-smoothing injections (Botox®) can be used to ‘flip’ the upper lip so that it creates a fuller, more volumous look but in a more subtle enhancement than dermal filler injections. At KL Cosmetic Clinics in Doncaster, we have mastered the art of the lip flip, so our patients who require a natural enhancement in a quick, minimal downtime treatment, can benefit from this procedure.

How does the lip flip work?

To perform a lip flip treatment using Botox®, your KL Cosmetic Clinic practitioner will administer a series of injections with the substance (Botulinum Toxin Type A) just above the upper lip. Botox® temporarily relaxes the part of the muscle over the upper lip, causing the top lip to roll upwards slightly, to give the appearance of a more defined and voluminous pout. The muscle relaxation in this area also helps to smooth vertical lines around the lips, commonly experienced by smokers or our more mature patients. A win-win!

When will I see the results of my lip flip treatment?

Most patients can see the effects of a lip flip treatment using Botox®, within a few days of the procedure. The full results can usually be seen after around a week. Results can last anything from 3 to 6 months.

Who can perform a Botox® lip flip?

Botox® is a prescribed drug and one of the most powerful substances on earth. This is why it is vital that you choose a medically qualified practitioner, such as our team at KL Cosmetic Clinics, to perform your lip flip treatment. Over-treating is a real risk and can compromise your ability to move your lips normally. It takes a comprehensive knowledge of facial anatomy, medical expertise and a high level of training and skill to achieve the right effect with this treatment.

Botox® lip flip Vs dermal fillers

A Botox® lip fix treatment is not a substitute for lip fillers and here at KL Cosmetic Clinics, we offer both treatments for versatility, and to give the best results for each individual patient. Before your treatment, your KL Cosmetic Clinics practitioner will assess your unique lip shape and volume, as well as discuss with you, the type of result you are seeking. They will also check your medical history to ascertain whether a Botox® lip flip will be safe for you to undergo.

The Botox® lip flip will be considered the best option if:

  • You would like a more prominent pout to your lips but in a subtle way
  • You feel that your upper lip doesn’t look visible when you smile
  • You would like fuller looking lips, but without additional volume
  • You would prefer a more temporary treatment (2 to 3 months)

Dermal fillers would be considered a better option if:

  • You would like some extra volume in the upper and / or lower lips
  • You would like to smooth deeper vertical lip lines
  • You would like to enhance the shape of your lips
  • You would like to address any asymmetry of your lips
  • You would like a longer-lasting lip treatment (6 to 12 months)

In some cases, we may decide to take a holistic approach to your lip enhancement and provide both treatments to add volume and definition as well as to lift the upper lip slightly. However, this will be discussed initially in your pre-treatment consultation.

The lip flip using Botox® can be a highly effective option for those patients who feel that dermal fillers might not address the concerns they have about their upper lip. However, it is extremely important to have a lip flip treatment with a highly-experienced practitioner, who has performed this treatment many times, as over-treating can cause issues.
