National Weight Loss Programme (NWLP)

Losing weight can feel like an uphill struggle and if you don’t have the right support, it can seem impossible to go it alone.

At KL Cosmetic Clinics in Doncaster, we know how difficult it can be to lose weight on your own, and how confusing it can be to choose a plan that suits your lifestyle and needs. We are now CQC registered and offer a weight loss consultation to assess your weight, your ideal weight and your lifestyle. We also check your medical history, to ensure that you are well enough for any programme we recommend.

Part of our weight loss and weight management offering is The National Medical Weight Loss Programme (NWLP), which uses FDA-approved medication licensed for weight management. NWLP medication has passed numerous clinical trials, to ensure its safety. It is the only approved, injectable prescription medication available in the UK for weight loss and weight management.

The key to your success with NMWLP is the combination of daily or weekly injectable medication, as well as a sensible meal and exercise plan, so that you lose the weight and most importantly, keep it off.

What is the medication in the
National Weight Loss Plan?

We use medication called Saxenda and Ozempic. It is the same product you’ll find in other weight loss injections such as ‘Skinnyjab’, ‘Skinny pen’, ‘Weight loss jab’ and ‘Skinny revolution’. It suppresses hunger so you are able to eat a calorie-controlled diet much easier than using willpower alone.

These injections work by mimicking GLP-1, which is the hormone your body produces on a full stomach.

Multiple trials have shown that Ozempic and Saxenda improve weight loss in comparison to a healthy diet and exercise routine alone.

Weight loss clinics in Doncaster at
KL Cosmetic Clinics: How it works

Your weight loss journey with us here at KL Cosmetic Clinics will start with an initial consultation and medical screening questionnaire. This will ensure that you are suitable and fit to commence the programme.

Once your medical screening is complete, the full programme can be discussed with your practitioner. It may be necessary at this stage to obtain blood results from your GP or arrange for a blood test to be undertaken.

Once we have assessed these bloods, we can propose your bespoke plan. If you are not keen to go ahead, that is fine. Our consultations are without obligation and we will still provide you with some general information on healthy eating and regular exercise to help you in your quest to lose weight.

Should you decide to proceed with the plan, we will formulate a bespoke programme of calorie controlled food, exercise and pharmacotherapy. We will follow up at regular intervals and will be your point of support, throughout the plan.

Once I have reached my ideal weight,
how do I maintain it?

Every patient is unique in how they choose to maintain their desired weight. Some people find that the habitual changes made when on the medication, assist in them to psychologically continue with ease.

As the medication supresses hunger, we advise that you eat far smaller portions of healthy foods during the programme. After which, you may have developed good eating habits and actually enjoy the way that healthy foods make you look and feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is fasting part of the NWLP program?

Fasting is not part of the NWLP programme. We encourage you to eat 3 nutritionally balanced meals per day, or smaller portions if you are eating snacks in between.

Some patients simply cannot face regular meals as the medicine prevents the desire to eat at all (it also greatly reduces the desire to consume alcohol). In cases such as these, we recommend having highly-nutritional, good quality supplements, bars and shakes, so that you can be sure you’re getting the vitamins and minerals you need, to be healthy.

The medication lasts one week, will I feel hungry at the end of the week?

Every patient is unique and has different experiences with the NWLP programme. In general we find our patients report to us that they do not feel hungry at all on the medication. However, you may feel less effect as the week goes on but it’s highly unlikely. If you are finding that you are getting hungry towards the end of each week, it’s important to let us know, so we may alter the dose of medication or ‘tweak’ the programme for you.

Do the injections hurt?

There is minimal pain with the injection and many patients comment they hardly feel it. Saxenda is a daily injection treatment, and Ozempic is a weekly injection.

Is the NWLP legal?

Yes, it is 100% legal and was previously developed as a medication for type 2 diabetes, so it has been clinically trialled and approved for this category of patients.

Are there any health benefits?

There are several health benefits of losing even 5 percent of your overall body weight, these include:
o A reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes.
o Improvement in osteoarthritic pain
o Improvements in the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea
o An improvement in blood pressure and blood lipid profile
o Improvements in overall wellbeing and health-related quality of life
o A reduction in cardiovascular risk factors
o Improvements in self-esteem and confidence

Are there any side-effects with the NWLP programme?

As with any medication, there are possible side-effects with the NWLP programme:
o Around 25% of our patients report that they feel nauseous for a couple of days to a week. An initial induction period for the medication can be discussed in your consultation, to help combat feelings of sickness.
o Headaches are also commonly experienced, therefore, it’s important to drink plenty of water.
o Other short-lived side effects can include tummy ache, dizziness, fatigue, low blood sugar, vomiting, diarrhoea and an increased heart rate.

Is there anyone who cannot undergo the NWLP programme?

This is a treatment for people who are considered ‘overweight’ or ‘obese’ and therefore, an assessment of your BMI will be conducted at your initial consultation. In general, we will consider patients with a BMI of over 27.

Other contraindications include the following:

o Pregnancy or breastfeeding
o Plans to become pregnant
o Allergic reaction to the medicine
o Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndrome
o A family history of medullary thyroid cancer or other thyroid carcinomas
o Any patient who is under 18 or over 75

When will I see the results?

Within 4 to 6 weeks, you should see significant results of weight loss in excess of a stone. However, everyone is different in how quickly they will lose the excess weight.
